KOAN – A Dialogue Between Light, Materiality, and Architecture
Designed by Kokaistudios, the KOAN system is one of Lualdi’s most recognized architectural elements. More than a partition, KOAN transforms the threshold between rooms into a sculptural expression.
The design blends three materials in perfect harmony:
- Wood for warmth and tactile richness
- Aluminum for structural clarity and modern refinement
- Glass for transparency, lightness, and visual rhythm
Its signature detail is a sequence of vertical wooden slats of varying lengths suspended within glass, creates what Lualdi describes as a “scenographic cut”. This interplay of openness and opacity introduces a dynamic architectural rhythm.
Technical Precision with Tailored Versatility
One of the system’s greatest strengths is its versatility. KOAN can be customized for a range of architectural styles and project requirements:
- Configurations: sliding doors or fixed panels
- Wood essences: natural oak, canaletto walnut, moka oak
- Glass options: transparent, satin, reflective, or tone variations
- Aluminum profiles: refined, minimal, engineered for durability
These combinations allow KOAN to adapt effortlessly to contemporary villas, refined apartments, hospitality environments, and retail spaces – offering designers the freedom to shape ambience through transparency, light, and material contrast.

This year at Downtown Design, KOAN was featured as an architectural element within OBEGI Home’s multi-brand stand. Its presence reinforced an important conversation in interior design: furniture defines décor, but architectural elements define space itself.
Visitors were able to experience KOAN in-person which presented a unique opportunity to appreciate the material dialogue.
